BQ25713: BQ25713 + BQ34110 with NiMH: overkill?

Part Number:BQ25713

Hello.

I know BQ34110 is supported on the Pwr Mgmt Forum but I expect to get some advice about the combination above.

I am working on a design based on NiMH (10 cells - 12V nominal) and BQ25713 is perfect for it as the nominal input voltage is 12V. However its support to NiMH is limited so I will have a microcontroller for PS control that could add the missing features through firmware. The thing is I need to have some sort of charge state control to estimate the time left when operating from batteries. Enters BQ34110 but it looks like an overkill. OTOH, adding circuitry would probably be similar costwise. My main concern is the system, especially firmware, gets too complex with this item. On the plus side, monitoring is basically done inside it and I would need just to configure it properly. Also there are some calibration steps that I am not sure are needed in my application (I would prefer avoiding it if I could).

So, I would appreciate some suggestion on this matter. Is this a good way to go or I am overengineering it and I am missing a simpler way to do it?

Thanks in advance for your inputs.
