BQ34Z100-G1 How is the external LED shift register driven?

Hello,

                I have 1 specific question on the bq34z100-G1 battery gauge chip – I could not find any detailed information on how the external LED shift register is driven, besides which pin is clock and which is data.  We’re using the external LED signals as a charge request output if the product is turned off (i.e. no I2C active), so the details are important. 

What does the external LED interface do if VEN is always connected to REG25?  Are there any app notes for this part, besides the high-voltage/high current brief?  I didn’t see any others referred to on the TI website.
