BQ27GDK000EVM: Learning cycle discharge issue.

Part Number:BQ27GDK000EVM

I had an issue with the BQ27GDK000EVM and received the more detailed schematic in PDF form. After probing the test points I found that the output of the 4.096V voltage reference chip U4 was only 2.596. I replaced U4 with a new REF3240 and the output was still 2.596. I though maybe the DAC8560 (U10) was damaged and replaced it with a new DAC8560 but again the voltage was 2.596. After probing the TP49, TP68 and TP69 I found that CS_DAC and GDK_SCLK signals looked good but the GDK_SIMO was toggling very slowly between 0 and 1.44 volts. I believe the MSP430 is not communicating with the DAC8560 chip and the internal 2.5 voltage reference is enabled which is the default state. This is why the reference voltage is measuring 2.596 volts. I am not sure if the MSP430 is damaged or what is causing the GDK_SIMO signal to be incorrect so I ordered a second BQ27GDK000EVM.

With the second BQ27GDK000EVM I ran the GDK script for the learning cycle using the new GDK board but the process does not complete sucessfully. Initially the discharge stage ended with the status message "End Task (Unexpected): Discharge - false". I changed the discharge rate in the script from DCby5 to DCby10 with DESIGN_CAP defined as 4800. After this change the discharge completed but now the charge stage exits with the status message "End Task (Unexpected): Charge - false". I did have bqStudio recording the log of the but the only thing that changes is the current measurements. The status registers and flags do not change at the point where the End Task occurs. It appears that these events happen at or very close to the termination point. For example the "End Task (Unexpected): Dischage - false" would occur very near the point where the battery voltage reached the TERMINATE_VOLTAGE 3000. The "End Task (Unexpected): Charge - false" would occur very near the point where the taper current reached TAPER_CURRENT which is defined as 100. The EV2400 firmware is 0.18 and I am not sure what the firmware version is in the GDK section. I downloaded a version GDKFW_V1_06_INA220.txt I found linked on these forums. I had installed that verison on the first GDK board but have not installed it on the second. I am worried that possibly the firmware might have caused the issue on the first GDK board. It is possible that the GDK could be causing the unexpected condition? Alternatively is there something in the BQ27530-G1 data memory (flash) that would cause a fault and result in the GDK ending the task. I tried to adjust the Terminate Voltage and the Final Voltage but I still get the "Unexpected" message when the task reaches the TERMINATE_VOLTAGE in the GDK script. It does not seem to matter if I set TERMINATE_VOLTAGE to 3000 mV or 3200 mV the "Unexpected" event happens when the measured voltage reaches this point.

bq30z50: lifetime data, block 1; how to transpose?

  Hi team!

Kindly advice how to transpose 'lifetime data block 1' to corresponding parameters.

I see following description in bq30z50 TRM, sluu852a:

Output lifetimes values on ManufacturerData() in the following format:
AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIJJKKLLNOOPPQQRRSSTTUUVVWWXX112233445566 where:

• AA: Max Cell Voltage 1
• BB: Max Cell Voltage 2
• CC: Max Cell Voltage 3

Here parameters which usually require 2 bytes represented just by 1,. for example, if AA=0xd9 what is corresponding 'Max Cell Voltage 1'?

Thanks a lot for clarification.

Part Number:BQ27421-G1

We're using the bq27421-G1B fuel gauge IC.

The older version of the bq27421-G1 technical reference (SLUUAC5, June, 2013) states:

• bq27421-G1A is pre-defined for LiCoO2 -based batteries for 4.2 V max charge voltage.
• bq27421-G1B is pre-defined for LiMn2O4 -based batteries for 4.3V or 4.35V max charge voltages
The revised version SLUUAC5C (Aug, 2016) states:
• The bq27421-G1A fuel gauge is predefined for LiCoO2-based batteries for 4.2-V maximum charge voltage.
• The bq27421-G1B fuel gauge is predefined for LiCoO2-based batteries for 4.3-V or 4.35-V maximum charge voltage.
• The bq27421-G1D fuel gauge is predefined for LiCoO2-based batteries for 4.35-V or 4.4-V maximum charge voltage.
We're using an IMR (LiMn2O4) battery with the bq27421-G1B fuel gauge. Is the bq27421-G1B accurate enough to gauge the LiMn2O4 batteries?

Our circuit reads StateOfCharge (0x1c, 0x1d) of BQ27421 and checks Battery Level.

Charging time 90 minutes Charging I want to display the fuel gague level of the last 50 minutes as 100%.
(When CHARGE_COMPLETE state of charge IC is judged as completion of charging)

* Battery: 3820mAh, 14134mWh

* Refer to 3.1 Data Memory Parameter Update Example in the document "SLUUAC5C-June 2013-Revised August 2016"

and write "0x4A 0x0E, 0x4B 0xEC". Then the time to maintain 100% is reduced

* What should I do to make Charge IC's CHARGE_COMPLETE state detection and fuel gague 100% display close?

BQ27220: BQ27220 Sleep current

Part Number:BQ27220

Hi,

When the BQ27220 is in SLEEP mode, it will wake up every 20s to update itself.

When it wakes up, does it integrate its own quiescent current into the coulomb count? Since it is a constant current value (~9µA) and periodicity is fixed (20s), I would expect it to do so

My application is a low power IoT application where sleep current is an important factor to take into account

thank you for your help

Part Number:BQ40Z50-R2

Hi,
We're making prototypes of new project, that have bq40z50-R2 onboard. bqStudio says, that Device ID is 4500_2_08. I suppose, that it's about 2.08 Firmware;

When I go to www.ti.com/.../toolssoftware , download bq40z50-R2 Gauging Embedded Firmware v2.08  (ZIP 4249 KB )   - and unZIP it, I find, that it contains 2.11 version of firmware.

Could you fix it, so that archive contains correct firmware, ASAP, please?

Part Number:BQ27541-V200

I'm seeking the tolerance in reading current sense voltage on bq27541-V200. The  data sheet only shows integration non-linearity and offset. For a given CC gain, what is the tolerance on the current that it would report?  This application uses a 20 milliohm sense resistor and tests calibration at 1.0A.

BQ34Z100: Fuel/Gas Gauge multibyte atom read/write operations

Part Number:BQ34Z100

I am using a BQ34Z100 Fuel/Gas gauge and can not find any definitive information on performing an atomic multibyte read/write operation.

For example, if I were to read the high byte then low byte of the battery voltage, what guarantees do I have that the 16bit value does not change part way thru the read operation. The only guaranteed solution I have so far is to keep reading the 16bit value, until two values are the same - but this is not a very clean solution on a potentially highly variable value.

What I require is a clear statement from TI on the best way to do this (ie, are values latched when reading the high byte, so the low byte is atomic, etc etc).

Thanks in advance

Part Number:BQ78350-R2-DEVICE-FW

Hello E2E,

Our customer is using the BQ78350. When they sent a shutdown command from MCU to BQ78350-R1, F/W has disappeared. However, when same operation, F/W has not disappeared in BQ78350-R2.

What is the difference for BQ78350 R1 and R2?

Part Number:BQ34Z110

i AM USING A YUASA PbA NP7 12V BATTERY WITH A CONSTANT POWER LOAD. FURTHERMORE I AM USING THE BATTERY MANAGEMENT STUDIO WITH THE BQ34Z110 CHIP. IN ORDER TO MAKE MORE EEFICIENT MY PRODUCT THERE IS A SORT OF QUESTION OR DOUBT I WOULD LIKE TO UNDERSTAND REALLY WELL.

WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY CONFIGURE THE BIT FC SET %. LEAVING THIS PARAMETER BY ITS DEFAULT VALUE OF  100 I NORMALLY REACHED TO SET THE FC BIT. IN THE SAME WAY, CHANGING THIS FC SET% PARAMETER TO -1 , IT TAKES MORE TIME TO TRIGGER THE BIT FC SETS DUE TO THE TAPER CURRENT THAT SHOULD BE BIGGER THAT THE BATTERY CURRENT.  IN BOTH WAYS, THE BIT FC SETS TO 1, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHICH OF TWO CONFIGURATIONS WOULD BE BETTER FOR MY APPLICATION.

BQ27520-G4: cell voltage measurement and voltage drop on current sense resistor

$

Part Number:BQ27520-G4

Hi,

I am using bq27520g4.

I created my own schematic based on Typical Application Schematic from SLUSB20B.

Just in case, here's the diagram:

I am confused by the way in which the voltage on the cell and the current flowing through it is measured here. Let's consider the simplified scheme:

As I understand, the voltage on the cell is taken to be the voltage at the BAT relative to GND (we can call it V_measured). If there is no load, everything is fine, measured voltage is equal to cell voltage (V_measured == V_cell). However, when we connect the load, and the current will flow through the battery (I), the following relation will hold true:

V_measured = V_cell - I * R_sense

If the direction of current changes (charging), the formula will be:

V_measured = V_cell + I * R_sense

Thus, we measure the correct cell voltage only if the current does not flow. When charging or discharging, we can not measure the exact voltage of the cell. For example, if R_sense = 20 milliohm, and I = 2 A, then voltage drop is 40 millivolts, which is quite a lot.

It would be logical to assume that the bq27520-g4 compensates for the measured voltage value with the help of the measured current, however I do not see it happen.

Can anyone please explain to me how it all works?

Hi,

I am using BQ40z50-R2 battery guage.

I was wondering if anyone evaluated bq40z50 device driver against the acpi driver utility?

What is the advantage of using one vs the other? Which one is preferable?

I would appreciate if you share your experience using either driver.

Hi everyone,

I want to ask a question about calibration. Here is the configuration

Battery: 1x18650 2600mAh

Gas Gauge: BQ34Z100EVM + EV2300

I have calibrated the voltage, current and temperature as suggested in the datasheet. The problem now is what should I do to change the full charge capacity so that it is approximately equal to the actual battery capacity.

Thank you all guys. I am new on the BQ studio :(

BQ40Z50-R2: Battery charging problem

Part Number:BQ40Z50-R2

Hello,

I am facing a problem : I can't charge a 3-Series Li-on battery with bq40z50-r2. For information, I'm using a LTC1960 as battery charger.

I've followed procedures and tried to manually activate/desactivate the FETs for charge/discharge tests and this is what I'm obtaning :

OperationStatus[XCHG] pass to 0, OperationStatus[CHG] pass to 1, ManufacturingStatus[CHG_TEST] pass to 1, but it seems that the GaugingStatus[DSG] doesn't pass to 0 to indicate a charging status...

Do you have any idea why I can't charge my battery? For information, there is no problem with discharge (manually or automatically by putting FET_EN to 1).

Thanks in adavance for any help.

Best regards,

Renaud
