I am looking for Primary battery fuel gauges that work with Alkaline and Lithium primary batteries. Can you suggest some to me that have a widely adopted mcu interface (e.g. I2C, UART, SPI) and not HDQ or SMBus?

Impedance Track 3 for multi-cell LiFePO4 batteries

Hi,

I was reading this app note And it talks about using IT3 algorithm with Lithium Phosphate batteries. On the list of devices IT3 is included on, it states the BQ20z6x series. However, on the website for BQ20Z655-R1, it states this device is only for Li-ion and Li-polymer batteries. I was wondering if this is accurate.

If not, what would you suggest for a 4 cell LiFePO4 fuel gauge? I was also looking at the BQ40Z60.

Thank you for your help,

Josh

BQ27742 - Lowering the Over Current Setting

BqChamps,

I'm trying to design my BQ27742 to protect over current at 800mA.

According to the datasheet this is set by the OCD register as follows.

Note. OCD0 is mentioned twice, this appears to be an error in the datasheet, please confirm.

As far as I know the Vocd is the voltage across the sense resistor. In the evaluation board the sense resistor is 5 mOhm. So for the default 34mV is equivalent to 34/5=6.8A which is extremely high, The lowest setting of 14mV is equivalent to 2.8A which is still very high.

If I change the sense resistor to 10 mOhm the lowest overcurrent detect current is 14 mV/10 mOhm = 1.4A which is still quite high.

In order to protect overcurrent at 800mA, then the sense resistor has to be at least 14 mV/800mA = 17.5 mOhm.

The higher the sense resistor value the higher the overall power wasted.  Is there a better way to do this?

BQ27411-G1 available capacity

Hi

I am currently having an issue with the BQ27411 device internal to a pack - roughly speaking I have a battery pack that contains a charger and coulomb counter.  The cell is 2600mAh single cell, however I am unable to get a true representation of the SOC or the available capacity.  If the cell has been charged until the charger IC (BQ24257) indicates the cell is full the SOC states 100% but only 400mA capacity.  I am wondering if the issue is that it is always connected to this charger, and would the BQ27531-G1 be a better alternative?

Thanks

Allen

Update to BQ40z50-R1

I notice there is a firmware update for the BQ40z50 device. The change list says that old devices can be upgraded.

With the new BQStudio I have a BQ40z50-R1.bqz file but there is no option to program a *.bqz file. Is there a *.senc file or some other way I can use the *.bqz file as I have about 20 prototype boards I'd like to upgrade.

Thanks

BQ40Z50-R1 CUVC, CUV problem

Welcome,
I am testing of new Bq40z50-R1 in my project and I do not know how to set CUVC and CUV when the cell discharge @ -40^C

If I attach the load at -40 Celsius, the voltage across the cell temporarily drops to a level CUV. How to make undervoltage cell protection conditional upon temperature in the Bq40z50-R1 ? The cells that we use have the opportunity to discharge at -50 degrees Celsius.

In the positive temperatures, the voltage across the cell does not drop when I attach the load.

Voltage drop across the cell occurs in low temperatures and increases in if you are connecting a larger load.

When I set CUV at 2.5V and 240s everything works fine for low temperatures - Cell warms up during discharge and voltage rises above the CUV, but for  positive temperatures CUV must be set to higher.

How exactly works protection CUVC in the BQ40Z50?

error in BQproduction for bq40z50

Hi all,

I'm trying to operate the BQproduction system with HPA495 board.

I have 2 problems which I need you assistance in solving:

  1. cannot see the check box of "cell board found" no:

I am able to flash the leds and see the correct measurement of voltages and current test.

2.although "cell board found" is not checked I can run the test thread, I can see everything done correctly (firmware, calibration, testing) and than I get:

8888:an entry (class/subclass/parameter) is missing in testerinfo.xml in the bqz.

any idea where to start looking for the problem?

bq2060a RELEARN FLAG

Datasheet states that thebq2060A sets the RELEARN_FLAG under any of three conditions: full reset, detection of 20 cycle counts without an FCC update, or a midrange voltage correction. The bq2060A clears this flag after a learning cycle has been completed.

Assuming the RELEARN FLAG is set upon detection of 20 discharge cycle counts without an FCC update, will there be change/ reset  to any of the values (Ex: Remaining capacity) stored in the RAM ? if so could you please list them out.

Your quick response will be appreciated.

Vivek

Minimum Voltage Output Equation SLUUA04A

$

In the document SLUUA04A, section 4.2 the equation for Minimum Voltage Output is

Minimum Voltage Output  =  610 * (1+R2/R1)

which seems to make sense because R1 and R2 from figure 4-1 form a voltage divider around the FB pin.  What is troubling me is I know the default value is 6294mV, and the values of R1=332k and R2=35.63k on the bq40z60evm board.  We only get this value if we use the equation

Minimum Voltage Output= 6294mV = 610 * (1+R1/R2)

Can anyone explain this discrepancy?

BQ27742 - Modify Default I2C Address

BqChamps,

I'd like to modify the default I2C address from it's default which is 0xAA or 0xAB for write or read according to section 3.4 I2C Interface in the TRM.  I wasn't able to find instructions or a register setting in the DS/TRM.  How can this value be changed?

bqstudio with bq27510-G3 no battery chemistry match

I am using the bq27510-G3 fuel gauge and cannot find a match for my battery.  My battery is the VARTA LIC 18650-26 HC 2600mAh .

I have updated the bqstudio software with the latest chemistry zip file and cannot find chemistry with the same capacity, etc. The closest VARTA entry in the list only has half of the capacity and the wrong voltage.

I understand there is a MathCad based tool that can be used for this but do not want to buy Mathcad just to use this one battery.

What are my options on finding the best match for my battery?

What happens if there is no match?

The chemistry section mentions the default chem. id for a typical Li-ion battery. What is this chemical id number?

BQ27742 - Recalculating Checksum in BQStudio

BqChamps,

We're playing around with the Overcurrent Protection Feature on this device and we noticed that we chantge the Overcurrent in Discharge configuration bits OCD2 OCD1 OCD0 to anything but the default 010 that the MOSFET would open.

After checking the user guide it looks like the problem is the SafetyStatus [INVEPROTCHK] was set because the protector checksum is wrong.

Section 4.1.1.18 PROTECTOR_CHKSUM: 0x001A in the TRM described a command to re-calculate this checksum, however we are unable to find that command in BqStudio.

BqStudio doesn't have a discrete command for this, is the correct procedure to use the Manual Control Panel? Or is there an updated .bqz file which includes more commands?

Thanks,

Bq40z50 not charging when EV2400 not present

I'm having an issue with a BQ40z50 fuel gauge. The pack will only charge if it's connected to an EV2400 and communicating with a PC. When I disconnect the SMBus communication lines, the pack stops charging. I have already disabled the PRES requirement that disables the pack when the PRES pin is left open. I haven't been able to find the setting in the TRM that makes the pack require communication to charge. Please direct me to the TRM page or the GG file register that changes this feature.

Hi,

I am trying to write a driver for BQ27421 for ARM Cortex processor.

Just found a post here regarding I2C for BQ27425, do same rule apply for BQ27421?

Also, is the address increment automatically done? (I saw some other devices which does not perform auto address increment).

Thanks very much!
