Part Number:BQ40Z50-R2

hi all,

a customer of mine uses the BQ40Z50-R2 to manage Li-ion battery in a hand-held equipment.

We know about the issues of the Latch Counters mentioned in the document "bq40z50-R2 v2.08 Required Changes" (SLUUBS8).

Customer needs the ASCDL (short-circuit) protection, and cannot disable this in the equipment.

The document sais, fixing this issue is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2017, but no new firmware has been released so far.

So he went back to the BQ40Z50-R1, as temporary solution.

Can you advice me something?

thanks a lot in advance

BQ34Z100-G1: thermistor wiring and zero g environment

Part Number:BQ34Z100-G1

Hi,

we have a couple questions.

1. We want to use the batterys attached, is the CHEM_ID of this battery already known or do we have to go through the process to determine the Chem_ID?

2. We want to use the fg in a near zero g environment, but would calibrate the fg at ground before, do we have to take this special usage environment into account, if so how?

3. In your design you state to put the NTC thermistor in between reg25 and ts. This battery has just one thermistor pin, the other side of the thermistor is connected to ground. How do we connect the wires, we tried grounding reg25 and put the thermistor pin ont ts (and the other way round) it didn't work. A thermistor between reg25 and ts worked just fine.

4. Is there a way to change sampling rate in sleep mode?

Thanks in advance

BQ40Z50EVM-561: Difficulty getting the Battery Management Studio to recognize the device correctly

Part Number:BQ40Z50EVM-561

My project recently purchased a BQ40Z50EVM-561 kit and an EV2400 module interface. I'm having difficulty getting the Battery Management Studio to recognize the device correctly. Currently the Target Selection Wizard screen shows the Auto Detected Device as 4500_2_08 which does not appear in its list of supported targets. I can find no documentation on whether the kit itself ships with a BQ40Z50, a BQ40Z50-R1, or a BQ40Z50-R2 which are the three parts listed on the kit's product description page. I believe I am running the latest version of bqStudio as I downloaded it only a few days ago and the release date listed on its webpage shows July of 2017. Please advise as to how I should proceed to get the evaluation kit operating correctly under PC control.

BQ4050: Soldering Battery Terminals to PCB Causes FUSE pin to Assert and Blow Fuse

Part Number:BQ4050

I have the Fuse drive section of the BQ4050 configured as in the schematic below.  I verify that the FUSE signal is low.  Then, I attempt to solder the positive terminal of a battery to my PCB.  After the soldering process, the FUSE pin is asserted, turning FET Q7 on.  As a result, when the top most battery is soldered to the PCB the enabled FET causes a path to ground blowing the FUSE.  At the moment, I believe this to be the result of the solder tip being energized and causing a voltage differential on my PCB.  Have you ever encountered something like this before?  If so, how do I get around it?  Let me know if you require any additional information.

Thank you,

BQ78350: SOC% question

Part Number:BQ78350

Dear team,

Below is my customer question, could you please help give us some suggestions or work around solution? Thank you.

In my customer application, they set lithium battery charge voltage limit to 4.05V. After learning, when customer charge the battery to full, SOC% could show 100%. But when BQ78350 enter shipping mode and wakeup gauge again, gauge learning data will be reset, then that will need mapping OCV table(CHEM ID) in the gauge first to detect the battery SOC. If reset is happened, customer will found the SOC% drop to maybe 75%. We know, in general case, lithium battery charge voltage limit is >= 4.2v which might cause this problem. But is there any work around solution that can avoid SOC% drop from 100% to 75%?

Hi

In the  datasheet, it has been written that Input  voltage  range  for SCL and  SDA is  5.5. But  logic level   has  been  written as .75 Vreg  so  i should  pull  up the  SCL  SDA  to  1.8 V or  5.5 ?

2) I  have  checked   with  1.8  V as  well  3.3   V  pull  up  with both  it is  working  fine  why ?

BQ34Z100EVM: Firmware

Part Number:BQ34Z100EVM

Hi,
i'm working with a Lead Acid Battery (6 cells)
Manufacturer : RITAR (RT1270)
Voltage          : 12V
Current          : 7AH
Initial Current Less than: 2.1A (for charging)

Few days ago, I was stuck trying to return back UNSEALED mode of BQ34z100. So i installed firmware again, in fact the registers were clean and i hoped to calibrate successfully current, temperature and voltage parameters, steps which i fallowed:

1) I chose a ChemID in BQStudio list, exactly Lead Acid YUASA 0808 .
2) I set up "Number of Series Cell" register =6.
3) I want to set VOLTSET, firts i could do it, but now not, i was reading some topics i Texas forum, they mentioned SREC file is corrupted, the time i installed the basic firmware to restore UNSEALED mode, i just eliminate all of OUTPUTS file and I reinstalled sluc580 content in the same carpet.

Is the second time i try to calibrate BQ34z100EVM the first time i found out my battery was damage, Now the second time and i haven´t gotten to calibrate the voltage parameter, i could do it with current and temperature without problems, to these add the firmware problems.

Thanks a lot.

BQ40Z60: Where to tap "always on" voltage?

Part Number:BQ40Z60

I would like to have a very low power microcontroller always powered from the battery and/or VAC input.  Is it possible (a good idea) to tap this power from the bq40z60?  I am thinking it could be taken from the PBI pin.  I'm thinking of 1-2mA when system is running, and much less in standby.  Would this be a problem?  It should always have voltage on PBI pin, right?

The charger/power path is based on bq40z60 and essentially the same as bq40z60EVM.  The thought is to have bq40z60 disconnect power from the battery and VAC to the system when not in use.  The microcontroller will take care of deciding when to power up the system again and enabling the bq40z60.  The microcontroller is also doing real-time clock.

Any other suggestion for getting always on power?

  Thanks, Ryan

BQ34Z100-G1: Reg In by external regulator

Part Number:BQ34Z100-G1

The datasheet walks through how to create your own little LDO for the REG IN pin (which can take between 2.7-4.2V)...
If I have a battery powered system (5S2P, 18.5V nominal) and a 3.3V Buck regulator already in the system, is there any issue with simply using the 3.3V Buck?

I feel this would be more power efficient than burning power across a zener diode and resistor as the datasheet and EVM show.

BQ40Z50-R1: Fraction of boards not detected by bqProduction SBB

Part Number:BQ40Z50-R1

Hello,

a big percentage of several lots of boards with BQ40z50-R1 are not detected by bqProduction SBB. They are connected to the calibration board HPA169 Rev B. Error message: "772; No acknowledge from device". The same goes with Battery Management Studio. The other fraction of the same design is working without such problems. Is there a way to determine whether the device is running any code at all? Is it possible to determine if the device is running the preprogrammed firmware or if it is in bootloader- or rom-mode?

Thanks,

Sebastian

BQ27621-G1: Strange data from Subclass ID 82

Part Number:BQ27621-G1

Hello,

Before the Initialization of the device, I try to read the default values of the subcluss id 82 (0x52)

My algorithm:

1. Unseal the device (send 0x80008000)

2. Get block data access by writing 0 to address 0x61

3. Get data class access, by writing 82 (0x52) to address 0x3E

4. Get access to the first 32 bytes block, by writing 0 to address 0x3F

5. Read 32 bytes from the address 82 (0x52) (82 + offset 0)

I got:

 - 0xE8 0x01 0x00 0xC8 0x10 0x04 0x00 0x0A
 - 0x10 0x01 0x77 0xCE 0xFF 0xCE 0x67 0x00
 - 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF
 - 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF 0xFF

6. Get access to the second 32 bytes block, by writing 1 to address 0x3F

7. Read 32 bytes from the address 114 (0x72) (82 + offset 32)

I got:

 - 0x01 0x02 0xBC 0x12 0x02 0x00 0x00 0x00
 - 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00
 - 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00
 - 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x2C

As I can see, all the values looks wrong. By the way, the default chemID should be with the offset 36, but it's with the offset 35.

Where am I wrong?

Thank you for you help!

Hi

I found that AOLD current can not adjust by AOLD Threshold,when BIT7 of  ENABLE PROTECTION B  set 0.

So I change BIT7 of  ENABLE PROTECTION B  set 1,AOLD current can adjust by AOLD Threshold.

But  the default  setting of biit 7 in ENABLE PROTECTION B is 0 in TRM.

I want to know can i change   biit 7  in ENABLE PROTECTION B to 1?

BQ27421-G1: A, B & D Suffix - which type to select when dealing with different batteries?

Part Number:BQ27421-G1

Hi there,

were planning to use the BQ27421-G1 in our application and intended to use the one with 4.2V charge voltage ("A" Suffix). Now we are facing the problem that we maybe want to use the product with two different batteries. The both types share the identical chemistry but differ in the end of charge voltage with 4.2V and 4.3V, respectively. For the 4.3V maybe the "B" Suffix Version would be the part to use, but is there a way to use the same part for both batteries? E.g. a firmware solution? This would help us because we then could use the same electronics for both types.

Best regards,

Reinhard

Part Number:BQ27621-G1

Hello,

I found a mistakes in the Figure 1, Flowchart for Updating the Gauge Configuration Parameters in the  Quick Start Guide for bq27621-G1 (Rev. A)

From the flow chart (wrong! OK for BQ27421):

OLD_DC[2] = I2CReadBlock(0x4A, 2, 100) - should be 0x43

OLD_DE[2] = I2CReadBlock(0x4C, 2, 100) - should be 0x45

OLD_TV[2] = I2CReadBlock(0x50, 2, 100) - should be 0x49

OLD_TR[2] = I2CReadBlock(0x5B, 2, 100) - should be 0x54

The same addresses are for the writing!

I lost a lot of time to understand what is wrong in my configuration!!!

Please, fix it!!

bq78350: bq78350 battery Can not fully charged. Overcharge Protection actived

Part Number:bq78350

Dear Dear,

I am testing a new 18650VTC6 6s3p battery pack with controller Bq79630 + Bq78350.
I am just a user, and I don't have EV2x00 and Bqstudio installed.
I read registers data by SMBus under sealed mode.

The problem is :
When cell voltage is close to 4V, RSOC becomes 100, then charge Mosfet will be switched off automatically.
Seems Overcharge Protection is actived:BQRemainingCapacity() ≥ FullChargeCapacity() + OC:Threshold
So the battery can not be fully charged.
And every time the bat is discharged to RSOC=0, different FCC can be found at the time when 7% soc is crossed.
since every cell is only 4V around,  the FCC is almost 2000mAH smaller than the design value 9000mAH.

SEEMS the manufacture did not configure the battery parameters good?
or 3.10 3.10 Overcharge Protection  should be disabled by manufacture?
or  OC:Threshold 300mAH could be enlarged to 3000mAH?

Regards!

BQ40Z60: Charging process

Part Number:BQ40Z60

Hello Dear TI team

I have some problems with my custom bq40z60 board again. Now problems with charging occured.

The biggest problem is probabbly that I don't fully understand, how it should work.

I thought that, I will plug in AC adapter(I tried 20 V) and gauge will do everything for me. But it doesn't seem like that. When I plug in Adapter, it won't charge batteries.

I tried run my bq40z60 PCB without batteries, just with adapter and I measured output voltage 17,4 instead of 16,8 volts (I have 4 batteries in series - 4,2 [V] * 4 = 16,8).

So I realized that, I have to do it through Learning cycle. But It won't stop discharging.

As it is shown in 2 pictures below, I set 3,5 V as termination voltage, but it was still discharging.

register values are attached below

For better orientation i would rather sum up my questions in points

1) What exactly shoud the bq40z60 do, when I plug in adapter, and what is optimal voltage? Are 20 V OK (for my 4S1P) ?

2) Is it necessary to run learning cycle for charging battery ?

2) How to run learning cycle properly, when my battery is not fully charge, and I don't want to discharge it to much

3) What does Manual option mean (instead of automatic) for learning cycle ? Does it mean, I have to disconnect Load after discharge? Because there are FETs, that can eliminate current from batteries to the load.

So, when I chose Manual, I have to be with my board and when batteries are discharged, I have to be there and disconnect load ?

And can I rely on that it stops discharging on 2.9 Volts ? Becouse as it is shown on the 2nd picture, it was still discharging, when its voltage was below set 3,5 [V]

4) Can I limit current with Max Current Register ? Or what exactly this register does?

I attached .srec file.

Thank you for any help !

Hi,

we can use the EV2300 with Battery Management Studio (bqStudio)  to do calibration and test during engineering development.

but for mass production calibration and test, this Battery Management Studio tool seems that its working effiecy is much low, can't used for mass production,

we want to development a  PC tool for BQ27542-G1, to do calibration and test automaticly in the mass production line, where can I find any documents that describe how to send command to gauge bq27542-g1 by EV2300? we need it to calibrate&test the voltage , current and temperature,

tks a lot in advance!

BQ78350-R1: Shutdown after booting (bootloop)

Part Number:BQ78350-R1

I am trying to develop a battery pack with the BQ78350-R1 as companion and the BQ 76930 as AFE.
To test the PCB I connected the companion via SMB with the EV2300 and tried some of the commands in BQ Studio (LED_EN, LED_toggle,..). After some testing I tried the "RESET" command. And it did restart, but it keeps doing it ever since.
When I boot the AFE via the TS1 pin, it applies 2.5V to the REGOUT pin and the companion starts. After 10s the voltage at REGOUT pin drops to 0V and I have to boot the AFE again...
The AFE and the companion are conntected via the I2C bus.
It keeps rebooting even after I disconnect every power source from the PCB and reconnect it.
I assume this command must some how changed something in the EEPROM.

How can I resolve this problem?
