BQ20Z45: BQ20Z4X PFStatus register DFF bit definition?

Part Number:BQ20Z45

Hello team,

Please see below question from the customer:

One of our battery packs uses the bq20z45, yes this is an older design. We got some returns in recently that had the “DFF” bit set in the PF Status register:

The technical manual on Page 73 defines DFF = 1 = Data Flash Fault permanent failure

Can you give me some more detail as to what this means?

I’m trying to complete a failure analysis on the returns to determine if a change is needed. There were 2 packs in this state.

Is it possible to pay for yearly direct support with TI Engineers?

My company uses TI components in multiple areas of our product design.  One item we don't particularly care for is the indirect support path we have to follow when issues arise and that being this forum.  While the support format works for situations where we have an informal question that may not be critical, when serious issues arise we don't have a contact we can talk to direct.  We also don't like having to always share our issues on the forums for everyone else to see necessarily.  With some questions it doesn't matter but other times we would like the privacy of a phone call or email correspondence.  Does TI offer any service that my company could pay a subscription for a direct support line for our questions or issues as they arise?

Thanks,
David

BQ40Z50: SoC information and setting design parameters in C code

Part Number:BQ40Z50

Hey all,

I am currently using the BQ40Z50EVM R1 fuel gauge to track battery information. I was having some problems regarding SoC measurements.

Some background: I used the EV2400 with BQstudio to verify my readings were correct. I can obtain correct pack voltage, current, and other peripherals. However, when reading SoC I will either get 0 or occasionally 100 (100 is more rare). I am using a 3-cell series configuration. I have the correct ChemID pushed onto the board.

I was looking through the specification sheet and saw that Relative SoC will be updated after a discharge/charge, and was curious if a full discharge and charge cycle is required to get an accurate Relative SoC reading.

Another question I have is if there is a procedure in any of the technical documents for the BQ40Z50 for setting Design Capacity and Design Voltage? The older BQ27441 had a procedure for setting those parameters, but I was not able to find any similar procedures in the BQ40Z50 documents. (For reference, the procedure for the BQ27441 can be found on page 14 of this manual: http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/sluuac9a/sluuac9a.pdf ).

Please let me know if anyone has had any similar issues to this, or if they know of any common fixes to this problem.

BQ20Z45-R1: .chem file for LG Chem INR18650HG2

Part Number:BQ20Z45-R1

I'm looking for a .chem file suitable for use with the LG Chem INR18650HG2 and compatible with the BQ20Z45-R1 gas gauging IC?  I know that this is an obsolete IC, but we're trying to find an additional battery source for an existing design.  I've already downloaded both the most recent bqEASY software and the Gas Gauging Chemistry Updater Setup, but I didn't find a file that exactly matches the LG Chem part number.  Is there another .chem file that would work for this cell?

Thanks,

Nick Medor

BQ78PL116: Temperature calibration not working well

Part Number:BQ78PL116

I have few packs cannot calibrate correctly. Even i use known good temperature sensor to calibrate the cell 1 temperature offset always different from other cells.

Suppose the normal pack will get about -360 offset but the bad cell is about -90++ .  In actual fact, the cell 1 temperature is recorded at 41.6'C even is in room temperature.

1)Why the BQ IC is not calibrating the packs? I attached the photo here.

2)what is the Max Min range for temperature offset?

BQ34Z100-G1: SOC issue

Part Number:BQ34Z100-G1

Hi,

it's the first time that customers use BQ34Z100-G1. there seems like something wrong with SOC.

there are 3s lithium battery, for each: 3V-4.2V, 2200mAH

for project reasons, customers didn't use bqstudio but I2C.

configuration in dataflash is as below

1 set dasign capacity as 2200mAH, set design energy as 27720(2200*12.6)

2 set number of series cell as 3

3 set volsel as 1

4 Voltage Divider=  19237mv (it is around 4200*3*1.5=18900 and he calibrated it)

besides that, is there any other spec need configured?

5 set QMax as 2200mAH

then, he got SOC by 02 demand.

Abnormal result1: when V=12.6V, SOC=100, then it declined rapidly(10% per minute), after decline by 20%, SOC appeared as 0. only by restarting the battery, the real SOC can be get (estimated by the voltage ratio). After that, it declined rapidly  again and suddenly turned to 0.

Abnormal result2: the customer connected it with adapter, when voltage < 11.4V, SOC and RM kept as 0. SOC grown after V>11.5V.

could you please tell me where the problems are?

thank you!

Hi,

the customer use EVM. and connected 16 cells. Voltages of the lower 15 channels are normal but the voltage of highest one is wrong. By lab test, the customers found that the input of Sense16s-Sense15 was not equal to the voltage of battery.

he ruled out the hardware issues

do you have any suggestion?

thanks!

BQ27542-G1: What is the factors determine the I2C clock frequence

$

Part Number:BQ27542-G1

Hi,Sir:

As the spec from BQ27542-G1, we known the I2C clock frequence could set from 0~~400KHz,

And the timing is just fast mode timing Compatible with I2C spec,

Could it support standard mode run at 100KHz?

and the timing follow the standard mode?

Another question is what the factors determine the I2C clock frequence?

For the max frequence 400KHz,

we also could set as 200KHz, 300KHz,

But which frequence is reasonable and suitable?

Thanks!

Hi,

From bq27542G1 TRM, there is a sentence as "A loaded rate or no-load rate of compensation can be selected for Reserve Cap by setting the [RESCAP] bit in the Pack Configuration data flash register."

However, in bqstudio tool, I can't find the RESCAP bit in pack configuration. Can someone. Does this bit still exist in bq27542-G1?

BQ34Z100EVM: BQ34Z100-G1 EVM no acknowledgement after golden image

Part Number:BQ34Z100EVM

Hello,

I'm currently working with the BQ34Z100EVM, EV2300 and the latest BqStudio version (1.3.86.3).

I followed the user guide step by step:

1. I programmed the device to the latest version of firmware and pressed execute FW

2. set the number of serie cells (in my case 10)

3. set the VOLSEL to 1 and press reset

4. calibrated volatge, temperature, CC Offset and Board Offset, Current

5. updated the correct Chemistry (SDI INR18650 - 29E, Chemistry ID 2019)

6. created new .srec file with golden image

6.1 during the creation of the new .srec file an error message displayed: "ROM command result return invalid checksum"

6.2 but after the creation of the .srec file BqStudio displayed that the creation was successful and the error message was gone so I thought that should be fine

6.3 I programmed the device with the created .srec file and pressed execute FW

After a few seconds the connection to the device got lost and there is no acknowledgment at all. I'm also not able to programm the default Firmware

to the device again.

I guess the golden Image is corrupet but I have no idea why. Before I will order a new device I want to know what the problem was and how I can solve it.

BQ27542-G1: User_Rate-ma doesn't influence reported battery capacity

$

Part Number:BQ27542-G1

We have an 800 mAh single cell (LiCoO) battery pack with an integrated BQ27542 gas gauge, and seem to have something misconfigured such that the gauge does not give an accurate prediction of capacity at high rates. We have Load Select set to 6, which as I understand it should use the user_rate to calculate load compensated capacity. Since our load is an intermittent 1.3A pulse (lasting approximately 60 seconds), capacity at that rate determines our battery life rather than capacity at a lower average current. Unfortunately, the fcc always shows the ~800 mAh from the learning cycle, and the gauge still reports >200 mAh remaining capacity when the output falls to our configured 3.2 V terminate voltage. SOC and remcap never accurately represent the reduced capacity at a higher discharge rate. We have also tried setting Load Mode to 1 with a 4800 mW constant power discharge, but the behavior is the same. Playing around with the Load Select setting, we haven't seen any difference in effective capacity with any value of this register. Max Sim Rate is set to 0. This is particularly problematic at low temperatures, as the measured capacity before we hit the terminate voltage is effectively much lower, but the gauge only reports a slight drop in capacity. I am not sure if this is solely a consequence of simulating at too low of a rate or if there is also an issue with the RA calculation at low temperature. I would like to get the discharge rate problem fixed first, and then can better assess the impact of temperature. Thanks for any advice!
