Can the bq28z560-R1EVM-001 be used to emulate a bq28z610?

I am production testing a product that uses a bq28z610 gas gauge. I have not been able to find an eval kit for this gas gauge and am wondering if the bq28z560-R1EVM-001 could be used to do that? The master driving the i2c bus is a PIC that appears to loosely comply with the SMBus and i2c standard communicating with its battery using the bq28z610 command set. I'm hoping that the eval board could respond to the PIC queries and we could determine the few commands we need from this and/or use the eval board to simulate the battery. I realize I may be grasping at straws, but this seemed like a good place to start since the manufacturer won't give us the PIC code.

BQ40Z50EVM compatibility error in Battery Management Studio

Im trying to test a BQ40Z50EVEM. I downloaded the Battery managment suite,

Battery Management Studio-1.3.24_Build2-Setup

and installed it. I plugged in an EV2300 and the BQ40Z50 EVM into that.

When I run the Battery Management Studio I get the message:

The detected device is not compatible with this application!

Some actions could cause the device to lose communication permanently and enter an unrecoverable state.

Proceed at your own risk ...

etc...

What software should I be using?

Is the EVM operation dependent on the back voltage being present? must you have the cell balance leads connected in order for the BQ40Z50 to respond to the SMB ?

If its a different version of software needed, what version and where might I find it?

All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks

BQ34Z100EVM Calibration

Hi,

I'm using the BQ34Z100EVM with the EV2300 evaluation module to develop a battery monitoring system for a 12V, 40AH LiFePO4 battery. The BQ34Z100EVM board is set up for Multi Cell operation, with external LED's (the 10 LED's on the board), and a maximum input voltage of 16V. I am using an external current sense resistor setup measuring 0.0045 Ohms.

I am running into problems when I try to configure the data flash, mainly the Design Capacity, Design Energy and Qmax Cell 0 values, as it is limiting me to a value of 32767mAh/mWh. I read on the design notes for a different gauge (http://e2e.ti.com/support/power_management/battery_management/w/design_notes/bq27500-max-pack-capacity.aspx) that the limit for Coulomb counting is set to 32767, and would therefore mean that I need to mis-calibrate the sense resistor to factor this in. I have now set the Design Capacity and Qmax Cell 0 to 20,000mAh, and calibrated the EVM with half the current draw (it's actually drawing 6Amps, but I've entered 3A). Is this the correct thing to do when it was mentioned to 'mis-calibrate' the sense resistor?

Another thing I wanted to bring up was how do I run a learning cycle, and export the learnt values for the data flash constants in a way that it could be written to a custom board that we are designing using a PIC processor over I2C? Is this do-able with a DFI / ROM file, and how would I go about obtaining one for my battery system with the BQEVSW?

Thanks

bq20z45 AFE OC Dsg not working

I am looking at SLUA511B "Configuring the bq20z40/bq20z45 Data Flash".  On page 7 it explains how the AFE OC Dsg register works and the values it will take.

I set the value to 0x00.  According to the table on page 7, that means the OC protection will trigger when the AFE sees 50mV.  On my system, with a 0.011 Ohm sense resistor, that's 4.54A I think (50mV / 11mOhm).

I set my electronic load for 5A, but the OC protection does not trigger.  AFE OC Dsg Time Configuration is set for 0x0f (31mS).  In 2 seconds, the 1st level protection triggers (it is set for 2A).

If I read the voltage across the sense resistor with a DMM. I see the expected 55mV, which should trigger the AFE.  (Actually I see -55mV, positive lead on ASRP, negative lead on ASRN.  Does that matter?)

I set the OC Dsg register to 0x01, adjusted values and tried again - same result.

What am I missing?

Thanks

bq27441-g1

Hi,

I am trying to implement the fuel gauging into our design, but I don't have much experience with fuel gauge chip. I have couple questions regarding BQ27441-G1.

1. From my understanding BQ27441-G1 utilizes impedance tracking method for predicting the battery capacity, which means it has the advantages that device doesn't have to go to full discharge and charge cycle in order to get sort of accurate predicted capacity value. Instead, I need to run the charge and discharge cycle with a golden standard and create the golden image, then load the golden image too the rest of devices in production? As the user received the devices, and start to using the devices, the fuel gauging chip will update the information as the battery charge and recharge?

2. I tried to update the chemistry ID using gauge studio, by selecting the chemID then click update chemistry, but the system always got stuck and kept going forever, crash. I turned off the load and the battery is not charging when I did that. The question is it suppose to take very long to update the chemistry ID?

3. Reading the technical reference guide, it seems the chemID can only be read but not write through I2C? How do I configure ChemID? Is the ChemID part of the golden image information that get loaded onto the BQ27441?

4. Our design has microcontroller communicate with BQ27441-G1 via I2C, is there anyway that this golden image could be loaded to the fuel gauge chip from the host microncotroller? Say if the user replace the rechargeable battery, mcu start up and pull BIN pin low to signal a battery instert to BQ27441-G1 chip. Then ideally, in the mcu firmware, we would need to reload the golden image to the fuel gauge chip?

Thanks,

Nelson

bq34z100 learning cycle problem

I know there have been other posts on this subject, but my problem seems to be slightly different.  My battery is not updating Qmax or Updated Status on either charge or discharge, but all the relevant flags seem ok.  e.g. for a charge cycle:

1. I turn on IT Enable when pack is fully discharged and has rested for a while. RUP_DIS goes off and VOK goes on (QEN already on).

2. Then I charge until FC flag is set.  Then leave battery to relax.

3. After about 20 minutes, VOK goes off, OCVTaken goes on.  FC and QEN are still on, RUP_DIS is off.  But Qmax, UpdateStatus and Ra table are unchanged.

4. After waiting  4 hours, there is no change.  Qmax, UpdateStatus and Ra table are unchanged.

Any ideas?

The same happens on discharge - the fuel gauge, SOC1 and SOCF are working fine. VOK is set during discharge and clears during rest period.  OCVTaken is set during rest period.  But Qmax, UpdateStatus and Ra table do not get updated.

At no time has the charge or discharge cycle been disrupted and logging has continued througout.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a way  to convert the .gg and .dffs files to use FW mode?  They are recieved using ROM mode.

Also does the .gg file fully describe the data memory?

bq34z100evm Caliblation modify by Using the Data Flash tab of bqEVSW(EV2400)

Hello,

Please forgive my poor English.

With reference to the slua665, I have been trying to make the DFI file for mass production. So, Using the Data Flash tab of bqEVSW(EV2400), I am trying to write the configuration to bq34z100 EVM.

I have a problem about the operations that have been written of P.4 of slua665 as "Write the average calibration values to the optimized working sample board.".

Sometimes, the calibration of the CC offset can not be written. Other items in the calibration tab is similar, but does not occur on an item in the configuration tab.

Please teach me this problem occurs in what cause, or a workaround for this problem.

thank you. (Please tell me if there is missing information. I will prepared to rush it.)

Postscript:

I was able calibration Int Int/Ext Temp Offset, Voltage Devider, and Deadband by Data Flash tab. And When I changed CC Gain or CC Delta, the value cell became red, but I can be seen that written by pushing "Read All" button.

So, I can not modify CC offset calibration only.

BQ2084EVM

I just acquired a BQ2084EVM but I can't get it to work.

I connected it to a 3S Lipo battery, tied Sys Pres to Pack- and I get nothing,

No LEDs on the gauge when I press the button and no Pack+ voltage.

What else needs to be done to get the board powered up?

Also, I can't get the software reading anything using the EV2300 module.

It keeps telling me "USB Error. Insure USB cable is connected and Driver is working"

Any help is appreciated.

Sincerely,

RI

BQ78350 damage

Good Morning Ti,

I am just evaluating the bq78350 and bq76930 combination EVAL board. Having got thru the 76930 steps OK, I am having trouble with the bq78350. Could you assist please?

Whilst programming with the EV2400, the LEDs came on very bright and programming failed. Nothing as catastrophic as another member experienced see “re-blown bq78350” as I switched off before getting too hot.

However I did manage to persevere and program the srec with an EV2300. Unfortunately I think my gauge IC is possibly damaged as the bqstudio dashboard greys in and out with occasional timeouts messages and I don’t see as per page 22 of the EVAL User guide.

I am going to change the IC with a sample device provided by Ti. Thankyou.

My questions are:-

  1. Is the EV2400 programming blown IC issue resolved?

  2. Is there a new srec file? I am using - bq78350_v0_06_build_16.srec.

  3. Should I see as per page 22 of the User guide with no greying out of the dashboard? Note also no cell voltages measured.

Thankyou.

Regards

HPA 495 (Advanced BQMTester)

Do you have an up-to-date schematic and BOM for the HPA495 Rev A. The details in the user guide (sluu397a) do not match up. There are some resistors in the schematic which are not on the BOM or on the physical board.

For example: the datasheet schematic has an R51 which is not on the BOM. On the board it seems to be labelled as R10 but if I then look up R10, the BOM tells me it's 10k whereas the actual component is 5k6...

EV2300 64-bit drivers available for download

The "unofficial" 64-bit Windows drivers are now available for download from the Files section of the Battery Management forum.

Here is the direct link:

EV2300 64-bit Windows drivers

Why are they unofficial?

First, the officially supported tool to use with 64-bit Windows is the EV2400 which is now available for ordering.

Second, the 64-bit EV2300 USB implementation may conflict with other products that use the same default PID on the USB bus, like the TUSB3210 EVM.

Third, it hasn't been extensively tested on all Windows software and hardware configurations.

BQ76940 does not respond to I2C

Hi TI experts,

BQ76940 does not respond to any of the I2C commands. According to the oscilloscope traces, it does not generate ACK signal. (bus is not pulled down in the 9th clock cycle)

I have double verified the I2C connection and 'BOOT' signal is given prior to  the I2C communication. Further , voltage at REGOUT is also verified to be at 3.3V.

I tried all the possible address, (0x08, 0x18, 0x00,0x3f) and the result is the same. Finally I2C commands are given using EV2300 module. Again the oscilloscope traces showed the issued signal is correct and no 'ACK' is received.

What could be the reason for not giving the ACK for the address byte?

Thanks,

bq769x0 Shutdown and Wake Up

Hello,

What pins are active in the bq769x0 during shutdown? Are the CAPx pins low to their respective references? I assume REGOUT would be off.

I'm going to use the bq76930, but I need a way to wake it up using a charge voltage instead of a switch. I was going to use one of the pins as a signal to disable my TS1 pull-up circuit if the AFE is already awake. Please let me know if you have a circuit that works.

Thanks in advance.

stacking BQ76940 + BQ78350 combo

I am working on an automotive EV BMS, and I really like some of the BQ76940 specs working in combo with BQ78350 .

The BMS I would like to design would have 30 x 100AH, in an 1P30S configuration.

I want to ask you about to how to stack 2 BQ76940+BQ78350 combos ( each one managing 15 cells), and interconnect them to a host controller by an isolated SMBus.

BQ78350 disable ALERT signal on BQ769x0

Hi,

We are using the BQ78350 with the BQ76940 and the documentation for the BQ769x0 says that we need to write to the SYS_STAT register to clear the bit that set the ALERT pin.

The 0x58 SBS command from the BQ78350 does not work since it is a read-only register.

How would I reset the bits so the ALERT signal is cleared?

Designing a 4 Cell LiPo charging system with undervoltage protection using BQ40Z50

Recently Ive been given the task of sorting out LiPo Battery Charging for a project Im involved with. Id like some advice please.

1: I can find charger ICs and Gas gauge ICs (which appear to perform charging as well) . To implement a charger and gas gauge solution, can I use simply a bQ40Z50? Is it better to have both a charger IC and a gas gauge such as BQ40Z50?

2:Using the BQ40Z50EVM I note that the pack and the load are connected to the same terminals. The datasheet for the BQ40Z50 discusses how the device may be used  for Cell Undervoltage protection, but I cannot see how that can be implemented if both the load and the Pack are connected directly together (Contrast that with say the BQ24735EVM where there are supply connections, Pack connections and System power connections, all completely separate. How would Cell undervoltage protection be implemented using a BQ40Z50 using the EVM as a starting point for the design?
