bq34z100 Extended data commands

Hello All,

I plan to use the bq34z100 with a 6S LiPo pack but I'm really confused about how to configure the design capacity, design energy and the terminate voltage for my application. It would be really helpful if someone walks me through the steps involved in accessing and change the extended data flash commands. What I understood from one of the examples given in the datasheet was that:

1) In order to access a specific data class, the subclass ID must be passed to the DataFlashClass() register at 0x3e. For example 0x50(80) for the Gas gauging application.

2)Next I pass 0x01 to DataFlashBlock() register located at 0x3f and then subsequently write the Blockdata() based on the offset calculation.

3)Now what I don't understand is that the offset here is taken as 48(on pg 14 of the datasheet) but looks like the offset is 67 mentioned on pg 42.

Have I misunderstood the concept here.

Thanks,

Regards,

Krishna

Hi ,

I am using BQ2050 in my project to indicate the charge capacity of LI-ION batteries used for mobiles...

Two 1390 mAH motorolla batteries are connected in parallel & am evaluating the BQ2050 LED indications...

I have calculated the PFC as said in datasheet & did the jumper settings , but still the LEDs are showing charging status some times & never showed any indication for discharging

But i can do charge my mobile connected to these batteries & confirmed the circuit is working & only the LED doesn't showed up

Please find attached my schematic conections

Thanks & Regards

BQ Studio Chemistry Updater Problem

Good Morning Ti Forum,

I am trying to update the chemistry ID in my bq78350 eval

The chemistry ID code I want is in the list ie "290" but I get a fail response of :-

Chemistry Programming failed.

Error code = 1703

and in red at the bottom :-

Chemistry Programming Error: Firmware version in bcfgx does not match firmware of connected device.

I read in a similar post (David Thompson2) that there is a problem with chemistry updater in bq studio but that Ti was working on it and the question is now reported answered.

I have Version : 1.3.24 for BQ studio and BQ78350 FW of v0_06_build_16.srec.

Can Ti tell me what the status of this issue is or send me appropriate updates and files as necessary please?

Kind Regards,

Martin

FullChargeCapacity Changes

Hello,

I'm having trouble with a 4 cell pack based around the bq20z95.  Specifically, the FullChargeCapacity figure won't seem to settle.  We have tested the cells with a battery analyser and found that the capacity is a little lower than stated in the datasheet - 3.1Ah (@3A down to 2.5V, vs. 3.35Ah), but I'm more concerned that the FCC value produced by the gauge won't seem to settle.  Our application draws just under 300mA, so I would thought we would settle on around 3Ah.

As shown in the attached bmp, the FCC value does hit 3Ah for most of the discharge cycle, but after a full discharge, it seems to fall back 2.65Ah during relaxation.

Any suggestions on why this may be happening will be appreciated.  Perhaps I need to repeat the learning cycle?

Thank you,

Jeremy.

BQ76930 as stand-alone fail safe

Dear Sir/Madam,

I was thinking to use the BQ76930 as a battery monitor with passive top balancing. From the datasheet, I read the AFE BQ76930 will shut down the power circuit if an error occurs, it just needs a MC with I2C interface during charging and when you're rebooting the system. Did I read that correctly?

And if so, would it be possible to implement a BMS with just the BQ76930 on the PCB, not a controller? I mean that you only have your controller at hand when you're charging or rebooting and you uncouple when the battery is discharging.

And last question, would it be possible to implement this with an Arduino as controller?

BQ34Z100 and CHEM ID

I could use some help with the bq34Z100 integration.  I have an EV2300 EVM Interface board and a bq34z100EVM board.  The battery I am using is 855085-2S 7.4V 4000mAh Lithium Polymer pack that was created for us.  The fuel gauge (in our case) is not inside the battery pack, but rather on our digital board.  I modified the bq34z100EVM board to match my design of the fuel gauge on the board.  I followed the instructions to program the parameters into the data flash and calibrate it.  I believe that I chose the correct board type when starting the bqEVSW software.  I followed the instructions in “Identifying unknown chemistry simple discharge test – 24 hrs”.  I now have a text file with the data.  I downloaded a trial version of MathCad 15 software, but am having problems understanding how to use the chemselect.cont.mcd spread sheet.  I also have questions on how to generate the golden flash image and the best way to load it my digital board.  Can you assist?

Two chemistry ID for the same battery

Hello,

Saft battery MP174565 is referenced twice in bqESAY ID list : 0159 and 1147. This is the result of chemistry update from Saft. As I use a recent battery with new chemistry, I have to choose ID 0159. My golden image works fine.

My question is, when I will change my battery after 2 years of product life, if chemistry is updated again, does my actual golden image will works fine or it will need a new golden image ? I can't produce a golden image with ID 1147.

BQ27421 : Battery level changes improperly

Hi,

I am using BQ 27421 for measuring the Battery level. I am reading battery level at every 1 second and send it over BLE. The battery fuelgauge returns correct value normally. But when I observed it continuously, the battery percentage jumps directly from 48 to 45 and from 45 to 43. It was not changing in sequence.

Do I need to configure it somewhere? Has anyone face this issue?

Thanks,

Dhaval

I am working on a new project that is using the BQ20Z90-V150 Li-Ion battery gas gauge IC.  We are going to be using the new Samsung INR18650-25R cell for the application.  Currently your list of cells supported by the IC does not list this cell option.  When will this be updated to support the new Samsung cell.  Thanks.

some doubts regarding BQ27525

I have some doubts regarding system side gauge.

1. power on device immediately when a well-relaxed battery is attached.(no adaptor is attached)

in above case, if the gauge can provide the accurate SOC? My concern is that gauge will take some to take the OCV measurement when battery is inserted, maybe OCV measurement is not completed before power on device action. if so, the SOC prediction accuracy will be impacted.

2. when a not well-relaxed battery is attached for the first time, whether OCV will be taken or not?(no adaptor is attached)

if yes, gauge provides a inaccurate SOC prediction, correct?

3. the device with a deep depleted battery, then plug in an adaptor. how does the gauge work?

BQ34Z100EVM Calibration

$

Hi,

I'm using the BQ34Z100EVM with the EV2300 evaluation module to develop a battery monitoring system for a 12V, 40AH LiFePO4 battery. The BQ34Z100EVM board is set up for Multi Cell operation, with external LED's (the 10 LED's on the board), and a maximum input voltage of 16V. I am using an external current sense resistor setup measuring 0.0045 Ohms.

I am running into problems when I try to configure the data flash, mainly the Design Capacity, Design Energy and Qmax Cell 0 values, as it is limiting me to a value of 32767mAh/mWh. I read on the design notes for a different gauge (http://e2e.ti.com/support/power_management/battery_management/w/design_notes/bq27500-max-pack-capacity.aspx) that the limit for Coulomb counting is set to 32767, and would therefore mean that I need to mis-calibrate the sense resistor to factor this in. I have now set the Design Capacity and Qmax Cell 0 to 20,000mAh, and calibrated the EVM with half the current draw (it's actually drawing 6Amps, but I've entered 3A). Is this the correct thing to do when it was mentioned to 'mis-calibrate' the sense resistor?

Another thing I wanted to bring up was how do I run a learning cycle, and export the learnt values for the data flash constants in a way that it could be written to a custom board that we are designing using a PIC processor over I2C? Is this do-able with a DFI / ROM file, and how would I go about obtaining one for my battery system with the BQEVSW?

Thanks

Hello,

I am trying to execute three commands with no success:

Temperature (0x08)

TS1Temperature (0x5E)

TS2Temperature(0x5F)

Nothing is returned. However I am able to execute the ManufaturerAccess (0x00).

What am I missing? I am using Arduino to do all of this.

Production programming bq27541-v200

I found the bq Multi-Station Tester Software and source code v2.29 on another post in this forum.

It looks pretty close to what I need (except for a different serial number scheme), but doesn't seem to support the bq27541-v200.

Has anyone updated it to work with that chip or should I attempt to do it myself?

If I have to go about it myself, what compiler is needed?  Has anyone at upgraded the source-code to VB Express 2008 (or later)?

NTC with bq27541

In the datasheet of bq27541,

The thermistor circuit requires the use of an external 10-kΩ thermistor with negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor with R25 = 10 kΩ ± 1% and B25/85 = 3435 kΩ ± 1% (such as Semitec 103AT) that connects
between the VCC and TS pins.

But the battery pack was picked for my design has integrated NTC that is tied to ground, can I use the NTC connection that is illustrated in the datasheet of bq27510 for bq27541 too?

Also besides bq27541, is there any other single cell fuel gauge that offers State of Health?

Best regards,

Yunfa
